Sampa the Great, the stage name of Sampa Tembo, was born in Zambia, grew up in Botswana and moved to Australia to study. With albums such as ‘The Return’ and ‘As Above, So Below’, she reached listeners from all over the world and performed at festivals such as Coachella and Glastonbury. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to Zambia, where she discovered that her uncle George Kunda was one of the founders of WITCH, a band that played a key role in the development of Zamrock in the 1970s: a blend of rock, funk and African rhythms. That discovery inspired her third studio album, ‘Nu Zamrock’. Together with producer Cadenza, Sampa puts a contemporary spin on the genre by combining Zamrock with hip-hop, soul and traditional Zambian rhythms. As such, ‘Nu Zamrock’ is not only a tribute to Zambian musical history, but also a statement about her own place within contemporary African music and her vision for its future.
